SAFETY FOR KIDS
What an adult should know about Automobiles, Kids & Safety:
By law if you sit in front any motor vehicle you must wear safety belt. Children under the age of 16 must be buckled up regardless of where they sit. Even if the vehicle is equipped with air bags, they are not a replacement for wearing a safety belt
Here are some laws regarding children and seat belt safety.
  • Children under age one must be an approved safety belt wherever they are seeded. If under 20 pounds, they must face the rear of the seat, according to the standard in the code of federal regulations. However rear facing infant seats should never be placed in front passenger seats of a vehicle equipped with an air bag. Inflating air bags can seriously injured and/or suffocate the child. The safest place for a child any passenger vehicle is in the middle of the back seat properly buckled.
  • Children ages 1 to 4 must be in an approved safety seat when in the front seat. When riding in the back they must be protected by an approved safety seat or safety belt.
  • Children ages four to 16 must be protected by a safety belt into front or back seat.
  • Never hold a child on your lap or buckle yourself any child into one safety belt.
  • Always insist children in your vehicle buckle their safety belts before you start the engine.
  • Wear your seat belt properly.
  • Install and use safety seats according to the manufacturers instruction in the owner's manual. Approved safety seats are available at low or no cost at consumer agencies such as local public health departments. Avoid buying second hand seats as they may not meet federal safety standards or work properly, or may have missing parts or instructions, and if there's a recall you would not be notified.
